There is
even a written procedure for multiplication, for which you can calculate
multiplications that are too hard to do in your head.
Example:
How much is 538*217? The first thing that has to be done in written
multiplication is, to write the numbers beside each other everything. Then
the last digit of the right number is multiplied with the last digit of the
left number. Next, you write the ones of the answer under the first digit of
the left number. You have to keep the tens in mind.
Afterwards, the last digit of the right number is multiplied with the second
to last digit of the left number and the number you kept in mind (from the
last digits) is added to the ones. The ones are written again and the tens
have to be kept in mind ones more.
The
procedure continues until all the digits of the left number are calculated.
The next step is to repeat this procedure with the second digit of the right
number. The answers are then written under those of the first calculations.
(those with the last digit) This is how to proceed with the right number
until all answers stand written under each other. The last step is only to
add the answers together to receive the answer.
