The tangent, sine and cosine are the assignment of a ratio of two sides to a specific angle (in a right angled triangle). This means that the tangent from alpha is equal to the assignment from the opposite of a right angled triangle and an adjacent (so the opposite through the adjancent).This assignment of angles to the ratio have been figured out, used to be looked up in long charts, but can now be figured out with a calculator (keys: tan [tangent], sin [sine] and cos [cosine].
