In some situations it is unnecessary to give an exact
number, for example, by large distances and great masses. Most of the time
approximate numbers are even more understandable.
Example: When a car cost $ 18,959 it is usually said that
it costs $ 19,000. That means the price of the car has been rounded.
But how do you get to this sum?
The first question which you have to ask yourself is to
what digit you should round, after what digit will only be zeros afterwards.
In our example we rounded the thousands. It can also be rounded to the
hundreds or the tens.
Rules:
If the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 stand behind the digit you
want to round to, (in our example it is the 9 behind the 8, the thousand)
you have to round down. This means that the thousand just stays standing (18
465 becomes 18 000).
If the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 stand behind the digit you
want to round to, then you have to round up. This means that it the digit to
where you rounded to will be raised be one. (in our example of thousands: 18
959 to 19 000).
