We write our number in the decimal system. Ten digits are enough to do so: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Ten units make one ten, then ten make one hundred, ten hundreds make one one thousands, ten one thousands make one ten thousand, ten ten thousands make one hundred thousand, ten one hundred thousand make one million, times 10 is 10 million, times 10 is a hundred million, times ten is one billion so on and so forth.
