Addition of rational numbers

(+ 5) + (+ 4) = + (5 + 4) = 9

(– 5) + (– 4) = – (5 + 4) = – 9

(– 5) + (+ 4) = – (5 – 4) = – 1

(+ 5) + (– 4) = + (5 – 4) = 1

Subtraction of rational numbers

We subtract a rational number from another number by adding its opposite number:

5 – (+ 4) = 5 + (– 4) = 1

– 5 – (– 4) = – 5 + (+ 4) = – 1
